Is That 90s Show a sequel to That 70s Show?
That 90s Show announced — roughly 15 years after “That 70s Show “ — is a sequel to the original. That 70s Show reigned supreme on Fox for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006, centering on the lives of teenagers Steven Hyde, Donna Pinciotti, Jackie Burkhart, Michael Kelso, Eric Forman, Fez, and Laurie Forman, from 1976 to 1979. The show saw renewed success in the 2010s due to its availability on Netflix until September 2020. In October 2021, Netflix announced That 90s Show with Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp reprising their roles as Red and Kitty Forman, respectively.
Will Netflix bring back That 70s Show?
Moving forward, fans want to know whether Netflix will repurchase the rights to the original series, That 70s Show. Again, Netflix lost it in September 2020; however, since That 90s Show has such an obvious connection to the original, we may see Netflix push to get it back. Given Netflix’s partnership with Carsey-Werner, we anticipate more cooperation between the streamer and production duo. Who knows?
What can we predict from That 90s Show?
That 90s Show stars Kurtwood Smith, Debra Jo Rupp, Callie Haverda, Ashley Aufderheide, Mace Coronel, Maxwell Donovan, Reyn Doi, and Sam Morelos. Creators Bonnie and Terry Turner – this time with their daughter – Lindsey Turner, showrunner/executive producer Gregg Mettler, and executive producers Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner are also returning to Point Place. That 90s Show will feature special guests Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon, and Wilmer Valderrama.
The cast of That 90s Show is a mix of old and new, with fresh faces and appearances from the original series.
This means Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp aren’t alone in reprising their roles. And it appears the combo has yet to age in 16 years (wow). Smith’s portrayal of Red, and his fondness for threatening to kick anyone who upsets him, is undoubtedly one of the best gags from the original, so we’re already off to a good start.
What will That 90s Show encompass?
Netflix hasn’t divulged much about the show’s plot, but it has released a teaser. That ’90s Show appears to be following the same premise as its predecessor, with adolescents doing silly teenage things like smoking pot, attempting to buy alcohol, and everything else you do when you live in a tiny town and its lights out at 9 p.m.
Should you watch That 90s Show?
The only way to find out is to check out an episode when it debuts on Netflix, January 19. Maybe it’ll be excellent, perhaps it won’t, but fans will no doubt be happy to visit their favorite parents (excuse me, grandparents) in Wisconsin.
If you loved That 70s Show, this might be worth looking at. The question is: can it reproduce the fun but cheesy rat-a-tat that made the original so successful?
Will That 90s Show survive eight seasons?
It seems unlikely, especially given the frequency of Netflix cancellations in the last year, but we can’t know for sure. However, we wouldn’t be shocked if it continues to live well into the late 2020s.
That 90s Show drops on January 19, 2023, exclusively on Netflix.
