This just in: All the streaming news from Netflix’s Geeked Week that’s fit to (digitally) print. Geeked Week is something like the streamer’s version of a mini virtual Comicon. Taking place June 6-10th, it was a five-day virtual event that offered first looks at a galaxy of new shows and films heading to the streaming giant later this year.
Here are some of the most anticipated new titles heading to Netflix that were unveiled at Geeked Week.
Wednesday
Netflix “woefully presents” Jenna Ortega as the titular teen in Tim Burton’s highly anticipated Addam’s Family series. This iteration will follow Wednesday’s time in what is presumably a very goth boarding school as it’s called Nevermore Academy. At Nevermore, Wednesday is attempting to hone her budding psychic abilities to solve a mystery that hits close to home.
Catherine Zeta-Jones costars as Morticia with Luis Guzman as Gomez. And everybody’s favorite child of darkness Christina Ricci also has a role in the new series, though how large it is has not been revealed. Perhaps she’s a professor who mentors the young evildoer at Nevermore?
No release date set, but here’s hoping things “snap” into place by Halloween.
The Midnight Club
Mike Flanagan stays in the dark with this follow up to the stellar limited series Midnight Mass. The Midnight Club is Flanagan’s adaptation of the Christopher Pike YA horror novel of the same name from the 1990’s. For many millennial horror fans, Pike is something of a sacred cow, and Flanagan seems to share the same reverence for the author and the source material.
The Midnight Club novel follows a group of terminally ill teens through their end-of-life journeys, the high point of which is their midnight meetings where they share scary stories. The series will follow a similar structure, though it’s reported that Flanagan will use the framing device of midnight stories to pull in other storylines from the rest of Pike’s oeuvre.
The show stars Midnight Mass alums Samantha Sloyan, Zach Gilford, Annarah Cymone, and Igby Rigney as well as Aya Furukawa and William Chris Sumpter. The series is set to premiere on October 7th, just in time to cozy up by the fire for some ghost stories before Halloween.
Entergalactic
From the minds of Kid Cudi and Kenya Barris comes this beautifully animated adult series that follows the love story of two artists in New York as they also navigate the struggles of attempting to be successful in creative fields.
The trailer shows off some amazing animation that offers representations of NYC landmarks that are surprisingly accurate and faithful. And the cast is stacked including the voice talents of Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi himself), Jessica Williams, Timothée Chamalet, Ty Dolla Sign, Laura Harrier, Vanessa Hudgens, Christopher Abbott, Macaulay Culkin, and Jaden Smith, just to name a few.
There’s no specified premiere date, but expect the animated series to hit some time in the fall.
Rebel Moon
If the plot of Rebel Moon sounds familiar, it’s because the sci-fi adventure film is “inspired by Star Wars.” From action auteur Zack Snyder, the film centers around a tyrant named Balisarius (Ed Skrein) who attempts to take over a space colony and Kora (Sofia Boutella), a young woman who decides to gather heroes from around the galaxy to fight back.
The film is currently in production with no release date, and though it was teased in Geeked Week, no official teaser or trailer has been released by Netflix just yet. Though Zack Snyder has dropped some teases on his personal Twitter.
The film also stars Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, and Doona Bae.
The School for Good and Evil
Taking a break from broad comedy, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig takes a trip to fantasy land for the family-friendly School for Good and Evil. The film is based on the book series of the same name by Soman Chainani.
Though Kerry Washington and Charlize Theron are the big names here, the fairytale film follows two students at the school, best friends Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie). The two friends believe they’ve been assigned to the wrong school (good vs. evil), and to make things right, they’ll have to find “a true love’s kiss.” Big Fairytale + Hogwarts vibes, aka a magical formula that fantasy-loving tweens, teens, and adults alike will likely love to geek out on.
The movie has no official release date, but it’s expected sometime in 2022.
