Streaming This Weekend Daily: Morbius bombs for the second time, Tom Holland and Zendaya rule the MTV Music Awards, and Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick cannot be stopped. More details after the jump!

Morbius bombs, again

Jared Leto just cannot catch a break in the superhero genre. After triggering many DC comic fans with his take on the Joker in Suicide Squad and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (note to Jared: personally, I enjoyed it), Leto decided to give it another go with what looked to be a promising new franchise in Morbius. Alas, it was not meant to be.

After bombing last spring, Sony must have concluded (why we’ll never know) that there may be life left in Leto’s take on The Living Vampire. This, despite the film sitting at a pristine 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, it ended exactly as you’d anticipate for any Sony superhero property that isn’t getting an assist from Marvel and Kevin Feige. Weekend haul on its second outing? – $86k. Oof.

Leto seemingly anticipated how Morbius would pan out on its second run, posting a short clip of him reading the script for Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’ Time – followed by the theme music from Curb Your Enthusiasm – just before the film dropped in theaters. At least he’s in good spirits about it.

Tom Holland and Zendaya can’t be beat, unless they’re facing each other

Quickly becoming two of the biggest and most billable stars in Hollywood, Tom Holland and Zendaya appear to be unstoppable.

In last night’s MTV Movie Awards, Holland and Zendaya properties won a quarter of all available awards.

Highlights: Best Movie: Spider-Man: Now Way Home, Best Show: Euphoria, Best Performance in a Movie: Spider-Man: No Way Home, Best Performance in a Show: Euphoria , Best Fight: Euphoria, Hero for the Hookup: Euphoria.

Other notable mentions include Most Frightened Performance (Scream, Jenna Ortega), Best Team (Loki, Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Owen Wilson), Best Comedic Performance (Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds), and Best Breakthrough Performance (Loki, Sophia Di Martino). RuPaul’s Drag Race also did well snagging two awards for Best Fight and Best Competition Series.

Top Gun: Maverick continues to soar at the box office

Following an incredible opening, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick continued to dominate in its second week, easily rolling over properties like Morbius (poor, poor, Jared Leto).

Despite the film having several plot issues we’d love to have addressed, there is no doubt that Top Gun is back and better than ever.

After earning $291.6 million on its first weekend, the film continued to print money in ticket sales, racking up another $86 million as of midnight June 5, 2022. The sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun has now earned $548.6 million in under two weeks, making it a career-best for Tom Cruise.

Will we have to wait another 36 years for Top Gun 3: Grand Theft Aero? Just kidding Kosinski.
