Popcornflix is an over-the-top free ad-supported streaming service based in New York City, New York. It is owned by Chicken Soup For The Soul. Popcornflix is safe to use, has a robust interface that requires no signup, and a substantial amount of free content. It is important to note the company is not an offshore streamer like Solar Movie.
But how does compare with other free-streaming sites?
Let’s dive in!
Content Library
There are hundreds of free movies and television programs available at PopcornFlix, spanning all genres.
Typically, as is the case with all ad-supported streaming services, PopcornFlix specializes in older programming like 21 Jump Street, Tank Battles, and Bear Grylls Survival School, but they also have some unique titles that we haven’t seen in our review of other streamers, like Flyboys and Stolen, and even some off-brand knockoffs that are actually pretty fun to watch like 2012: Iceage.
The site has a monthly website viewership of approximately 200,000. Viewers can expect quality streams and many categories to choose from.
There are over 1500 movies on PopcornFlix.
No signup
PopcornFlix does not require viewers to create an account to use the website. The website is completely free. It’s pretty great to not be burdened with creating an account, however, it does limit the streamer’s ability to offer features like creating a playlist or bookmarking a favorite.
Ad annoyance
We’ve read reports about PopcornFlix’s ads. Just Google PopcornFlix ads and you’ll find reports of annoying ads on almost every page and popups that automatically open in a new browser. However, in our test of the service (we watched 2012: Iceage) we found the ads to be pretty unintrusive. The first round of ads was two short commercials for The General Insurance before the movie began, and the next break didn’t occur until the 15-minute mark (here we encountered 6 20-second ads, still not terrible). In comparison, we encountered 3 minutes of ads every 10 minutes on FilmRise.
Another neat thing about PopcornFlix is that it provides users the ability to personalize their ad experience, which is great if you’re tired of watching the same personal injury attorney ad from your area repeated over and over again.
App support
PopcornFlix provides application support for almost all major platforms, including Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Firestick, XBOX, Android, and iOS.
Popcornflix’s application support is great because it makes it easier to watch content in any room and on the go. Though we can’t help but feel like they’re missing an opportunity to create return customers by not including the ability to create an account and carry your experience across platforms.
Region error
In 2014, PopcornFlix expanded its coverage to several regions in Asia, but it is still inaccessible in India and Pakistan. However, if you have trouble connecting to the service, the site can be accessed using a VPN.
Pros
- Simple interface
- Good library collection
- Safe
Cons
- No favorites or playlist capabilities
- Not accessible in some regions without a VPN
Summary
PopcornFlix is a great service for casual viewers – particularly, those who enjoy older television programs and knockoff films (we do). It does have a smaller library compared to some of the other free-streaming sites. However, the interface is smooth and safe to use, and you can watch free HD content. Just another tool in your toolbox to escape subscription hell.
