As summer streaming season heats up, the weekly choices new to streaming keep getting hotter and hotter. Netflix has a lot going on this week with a new season of the Brit hit Peaky Blinders as well as new comedy specials hosted by Amy Schumer and Pete Davidson. But Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Peacock, and HBO Max are also dropping it like it’s hot. Here are our picks for the best titles new to streaming this weekend 6/10/2022.

1. The Worst Person in the World (Hulu)

An art house film that garnered quite a bit of buzz during Oscar season at the end of 2021, The Worst Person in the World is something like an adult coming of age film. From Neon, a studio that specializes in content that is quirky, experimental, avant-garde, yet universally appealing and accessible, the Norwegian dark comedy is directed by Joachim Trier.

Told fluidly in 12 chapters, the film follows four years in the life of an Oslo woman. The film features a breakout performance from Cannes Best Actress winner Renate Reinsve as Julie who explores new professional avenues and embarks on relationships with two very different men (Anders Danielsen Lie and Herbert Nordrum) in her search for happiness and identity.

2. Ms. Marvel (Disney+)

The Marvel Comics Universe takes on the teen coming-of-age story with the new series Ms. Marvel. Starring Iman Vellani as an Indian-American teen growing up in suburban New Jersey, the series explores the less super aspects of adolescence that everyone can relate to, including the struggle of self-discovery and becoming confident in one’s own skin.

In the series, everyone accuses the young Kamala Khan of spending too much time in the fantasy world of her favorite superhero characters, leading her to worry that she has her head in the clouds. But the fantastical world of superheroes turns out to not be all in Kamala’s head, and she is forced to explore her innate power as both a young woman and as a superhero.

From the trailer, the teen drama looks like a compelling narrative that explores both the nature of fandom and what it takes to transition from an uncertain teen into an empowered young woman confident in her own abilities. As more episodes drop, it’ll be interesting to see if Disney commits to following more of Kamala’s journey with a Season 2.

The first episode premiered on June 8th with new episodes weekly.

3. Peaky Blinders, Season 6 (Netflix)

You know that Irish whiskey you’ve been keeping for a special occasion? Time to bust it out. After a two year hiatus, everyone’s favorite British gang is finally back roaming the streets of Birmingham for Season 6 of Peaky Blinders.

The Shelby boys first came to screens in 2013’s Peaky Blinders season 1 and they have consistently left viewers wanting more of their cockney accents and dodgy dealing. Knowing what a cutthroat world it can be out there, the Shelby’s long ago learned to keep their business dealings all in the family. And their dealings might be coming to an end.

According to show creator Steven Knight, this will be the final season of Peaky Blinders, though it’s been hinted that the story of the Shelby boys will continue in another form. Reportedly, the gang will reunite to begin filming a feature film in 2023, presumably a narrative that will tie up all the loose ends of the Shelby clan left in Season 6.

The sixth season of Peaky Blinders comes to American audiences via Netflix on June 10th with all five previous seasons already available to stream.

4. Amy Schumer + Pete Davidson Comedy Specials (Netflix)

After the popular and critical success of scripted series Life and Beth on Hulu earlier this year, Schumer heads back to her stand-up roots to host a new comedy special titled Amy Schumer’s Parental Advisory. It’s a special about family life, the perils and pleasures of parenting, and the surprising reinvigoration of remarriage with sets from Ron Funches, Jaye McBride, Christina P, Rachel Feinstein, Chris DiStefano, and Lil Rel Howery. Premieres June 11th.

As for Davidson, his special Pete Davidson Presents The Best Friends will be his most prominent work to hit since it was announced in May that he would be departing Saturday Night Live after eight years. The native Staten Islander tends to stay trending for reasons other than his comedic body of work, aka his surprising-but-actually-makes-sense relationship with reality show mega mogul Kim Kardashian, a topic which is likely to make it into his set.

But the special won’t center around Davidson and his “very weird year.” Instead he will invite friends onstage for both comedy and musical sets including artists like Machine Gun Kelly, Big Wet, Neko White, Giulio Gallarotti, Carly Aquilino, Dave Sirus, Joey Gay, and Jordan Rock. Premieres June 12th.

5. Father of the Bride (HBO Max)

Raise your glasses for a toast. Just in time for wedding season, a new version of the classic tale about matrimony and parenthood will hit HBO Max on June 16th. The 2022 version of Father of the Bride is based on the 1949 novel of the same name, just like the Spencer Tracy (1951) and Steve Martin (1991) film versions that came before it.

But this iteration of the timeless tale follows a Latino family with Cuban and Mexican roots as the parents played by Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan come to terms with their daughter Sophie’s impending nuptials, all while trying to navigate the rocky road that is their own marriage.

6. My Fake Boyfriend (Amazon Prime Video)

In the Amazon rom-com My Fake Boyfriend, Andrew (Keiynan Lonsdale) has a big problem: He can’t stay away from the toxic boyfriend who just dumped him. His meddling friends (Dylan Sprouse and Sarah Hyland) decide to help him by creating “Cristiano,” a perfect fake boyfriend ideal for snagging Instagram likes. All goes well until Cristiano becomes larger than life as a viral sensation. Which is of course the exact time that Andrew meets his real-life dream guy, Rafi, a charming restaurant owner.

Great for a date night, My Fake Boyfriend sounds like the perfect easy viewing summer stream, and just in time to celebrate Pride Month.

7. Summer Throwback: Jaws (Peacock)

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Peacock is setting streamers up for a beast of a movie marathon by dropping Jaws (1975), Jaws 2 (1983), Jaws 3-D (1983), and Jaws: The Revenge (1987) on June 16th.

Audiences are going to need a bigger boat just to take in the amazing animatronics from all the Jaws films. It’s a great throwback choice for schlocky horror fans and savvy cinephiles alike as Jaws is the film that launched Steven Spielberg’s career to A-list status and made him a household name.
