Cobra Kai might’ve started off as a mediocre hit on YouTube Red, but since scoring a deal with Netflix, the Karate Kid follow up has come into its own creatively. Truly hitting its stride in Season 2, the martial arts drama has been steadily picking up fans and exceeding expectations.

The show’s growing popularity could in part be due to showrunner’s leaning into 1980’s nostalgia, but solid story plotting that brings to life relatable characters that fans love to root for also plays a large part.

Nostalgia aside, the show’s quality is undeniable in light of the awards its racked up. In 2018, the show won the Golden Tomato for best TV drama and has been nominated for a slew of other awards, including the Teen Choice Award, People’s Choice Award, and the Screen Actors Guild Award.

With established creative bona fides and a growing fanbase, what direction will the dojo drama be taking in Season 5? The newly dropped trailer sheds some light on the future of Cobra Kai.

Is There a New Baddie in the Valley?

Season 4’s villain Kreese was hauled off by law enforcement in the finale, and he’s nowhere to be found in the Season 5 teaser trailer. It wouldn’t be surprising if the sensei everybody loves to hate doesn’t pop back up until the end of Season 5. So who will be this season’s Big Bad? If the teaser is any indication, it’s possible Silver might be filling his villainous shoes.

Will Chozen Shake Things Up?

Even though fans have only seen Chozen for a few episodes, it was clear in that brief time just how effective he could be as a sensei. With Daniel roping him in and the fact that he called himself the “gasoline” to Daniel’s “fire,” this pairing could prove to ignite a lot of action and conflict moving through Season 5.

The Mexico Mission

Season 4 ended with Miguel leaving for Mexico to find his father. It seemed like the character might take a back seat, but Robby and Johnny are going on a retrieval mission. Perhaps Robby and Miguel can work their problems out and return to the Valley as a united front. If so, this combo united with Johnny, Daniel, and Chozen might just be the perfect antidote to the villainous Silver.

These are fun fan theories to speculate about, but we won’t know anything until the new season of Cobra Kai premieres on Netflix on September 9th, 2022. Older episodes are available now to stream.
