Streaming This Weekend Daily: Netflix adds teeth to its August line up with The Sandman and Resident Evil, while Disney drops the first trailer for its new animated film, Strange World. More after the jump!

Netflix kicks off Geeked Week with first trailer for “The Sandman”

If you’re not familiar with Neil Gaiman’s wildly popular graphic novel The Sandman, you’re in for a treat.

After being imprisoned for 70 years, Morpheus – a.k.a. The Sandman – (Tom Sturridge) escapes to find his kingdom, the Dreaming, which transcends earth, heaven, and hell, left in shambles without its former ruler.

In the comics, Morpheus withdrew and softened his cruel nature during captivity, despite having ruled for millions of years numb to the pain and fears of others. After escaping, Morpheus seeks revenge and looks to reclaim his thrown in a weakened state, battling his captors – who have an addiction to Dream Powder – and the legions of hell.

Originally published as a DC property, The Sandman saw tie ins with characters like Martian Manhunter, Lucifer, Batman, and Green Lantern. It will be interesting to see how close the Netflix series sticks to the source material and what, if any, connection it may have to other DC properties.

Also starring Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, and Asim Chaudhry as Abel. The Sandman drops on Netflix August 5th.

Resident Evil posts new trailer and July 14th release date on Netflix

The Umbrella Corp. is back and they want you to believe they’ve changed in Netflix’s newest take on Resident Evil.

But they haven’t, and New Racoon City is about to find out the hard way.

Experimenting with a serum called the T-Virus, residents of New Racoon City are drawn into the company’s fold as Umbrella presents itself as working to make amends (for all the horrors in the last 25 years) – when in fact, they’re back to their old ways, experimenting on the City’s residents.

Filled with old badies and some new ones alike (a centipede even gets the T-Virus treatment), Netflix’s take on the classic horror genre game hits Netflix July 14th and stars Ella Balinska as Jade Wesker, Lance Riddick (who we’d pay to see in every movie) as Albert Wesker, Lea Vivier as Susana Franco, Mpho Osei Tutu as Yen, and Paola Nunez as Evelyn Marcus.

Disney releases the first trailer for Strange World

On the lighter side, Disney dropped the first trailer for Strange World, a film that follows a family of explorers who traverse time and space, in a place of “infinite mystery.”

Not much is yet know about Strange World, save the fact that the legendary family of explorers will have to put differences aside as they traverse the wild and extraordinary expanse of space and time.

In the trailer, we see a family of seasoned travelers set off on a journey across the unimaginable, where trees shaped like trousers walk along exotic landscapes and fish swim in the sky.

With a retro look – think 1950’s sci-fi vibe (ala Forbidden Planet) – and a B-movie bonkers-sound track, Disney is again reaching into the unknown to bring viewers an experience that is different than anything it has done before.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Alan Tudyk, we’ll get to see what Disney is up to November 23, 2022!
