Despite the title, the new Netflix assassin thriller The Gray Man Parents Guide is anything but dull and dreary.
Netflix dropped a trailer earlier this week that indicates that audiences eager for a traditional summer action blockbuster won’t be disappointed. Riddled with explosions, gunshots, car crashes, and fireworks, the trailer handily checks all the typical action-adventure boxes. But the film’s stars, their chemistry, and the subtle snark are likely to pull in a broader audience, the type who like a little intrigue and humor to accompany their big-budget car crashes.
And that audience will likely be quite sizable because the film’s stars couldn’t be any hotter, both in a “Hollywood clout” sense and an “aesthetically pleasing sex symbol” sense. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, both at their beefiest and snarkiest, a winning combination all around.
Joining them in action is It-Girl-Next-Door Ana de Armas, who won the hearts of murder mystery fans as the naive nurse Marta in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out in 2019 and has been showcasing her range and overwhelming talent ever since (Deep Water, Knock Knock, No Time to Die).
And there’s even more eye candy. Bridgerton fan favorite and known panty-dropper Regé-Jean Page pops up in the trailer, though it’s unclear how big his role in the full film will be.
The Gray Man Brings Even More Heat
The cast is so stellar, it’s easy to get distracted and forget that the film’s directing and writing team ain’t nothing to sneeze at either. The thriller is directed by veterans of the MCU, Anthony and Joe Russo, the brother directing team behind Infinity War and Endgame, and a few entries in the Captain America series. Joe Russo cowrote the script based on the assassin adventure novel by Mark Greaney.
Once again, the film’s stars are so hot, it’s easy to forget that this thing has a plot and is very intriguing. Here’s the official description: “The Gray Man is CIA operative Court Gentry (Gosling), aka, Sierra Six. Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death. But now the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll need it.”
Sounds like the heat is definitely on.
The Gray Man also stars Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura, and Alfre Woodard and will be available for streaming on Netflix on July 22nd.
