This just in: The STW Daily featuring all the streaming news that’s (digitally) fit to print for Monday, June 13th, 2022. The Old Guard, Squid Game, Made for Love, and more.
Red Light, Green Light
Season 2 of the universally popular Squid Game has been greenlit and is officially heading back for another round of “friendly” competition. The show’s creator (and writer/producer/director) Hwang Dong-hyuk made the announcement via Netflix, dropping a bit of a teaser about what is to come for round 2.
Netflix has not announced a release date yet, but here’s hoping fans don’t have to wait 12 years.
Still Looking for Love
In shows-that-aren’t-returning news, HBO Max announced that it has cancelled Made for Love after two seasons. The dark comedy was really only hitting its stride before getting the axe. Starring Cristin Milioti, Billy Magnussen, and Ray Romano, the Sci-Fi comedy was an insightful metaphor for the real difficulties of divorce, and also seemed to be inspired by the real-life drama that is the Elon Musk/Grimes relationship.
In a statement obtained by Variety, representatives for HBO Max said, “We are tremendously grateful for the truly spectacular journey of these past two seasons, courtesy of Alissa Nutting and Christina Lee, Cristin, Billy, Ray and the entire Made for Love cast and creative team–especially Zelda the talking dolphin and everyone’s favorite synthetic love interest, Diane. Like a Gogol chip, the series will always be on our minds.”
Let the Music Play
As one high-concept comedy gets the axe, another lives to see another day. Apple TV+ recently announced they had renewed musical comedy Schmiggadoon for a second season with Kimmy Schmidt‘s Titus Burgess signing on for a few musical numbers.
The show stars Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong as a couple who discover a magical town where everyone acts like they’re in a classical musical. Created by Ken Daurio and directed by Men in Black‘s Barry Sonnenfeld, the show features elaborate and whimsical musical numbers along with a whole lot of toothy grins.
The second season has not received an official premiere date as of yet, but reportedly will follow Key and Strong as they explore Schmicago, another musical town set in the world of ‘60s and ‘70s musicals.
Out With The Old Guard, in With the New
Netflix has announced a sequel to the 2020 action hit The Old Guard. Charlize Theron is returning, and she’ll be working with some new blood including Uma Thurman and Henry Golding. The first film followed a covert group of immortal mercenaries on a dangerous new mission just as a new member entered their ranks.
There’s no real info on the plot of the sequel or what roles Thurman and Golding will be playing. But what is known is that old guard KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be back for the second go-round.
The Old Guard is based on the comic book by Leandro Fernandez and Greg Rucka, the latter of whom penned the script for the sequel.
Again, not much has been released by way of plot, but the film will be “taking cues” from the second arc of the comic, per The Hollywood Reporter.
