This just in: The STW Daily featuring all the streaming news that’s fit to (digitally) print for Saturday, June 18th, 2022. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin comes to HBO Max.
Tell Me Lies, Tell Me Sweet Little Lies Pretty Little Liars
The evil A is back and so are a new group of Liars for the mysterious entity to torment. HBO Max released the trailer this week for the latest Pretty Little Liars spin-off, this one heading to a new town for a story and tone that are markedly darker and grittier than the original teen soap thriller.
Here’s the the official logline for Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin:
“Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls—a brand new set of Little Liars—find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago…as well as their own.”
The new trailer certainly gives off a more intense horror vibe than the original series courtesy of some David Fincher-style shots (not to mention the “original sin” theme that served as the plot framing of the director’s Se7en).
Only time will tell just how dark and deceitful this iteration will be. The new series premieres on July 28th on HBO Max.

Netflix is putting a musical twist on a magical millennial fave. The streamer released the trailer for the upcoming Matilda The Musical earlier this week, a musical take on the beloved Roald Dahl novel.
It will be the second version of the novel to make it to film after the 1996 adaptation (streaming now on Starz or on Hulu with a premium subscription) starring Mara Wilson in the title role with Danny Devito and Rhea Pearlman as her less-than-supportive parents.
The musical update stars Emma Thompson as sadistic Headmistress Trunchbull and young newcomer Alisha Weir as Matilda.
Matilda The Musical is more than a simple adaptation of the novel. The Netflix film is more precisely a film adaptation of the stage musical that originated in the Royal Shakespeare company and went on to win a slew of Olivier Awards on the West End and Tony Awards on Broadway.
To retain the magic of the stage show, Netflix kept the creative team behind the award-winning musical together for the film. Olivier winner Matthew Warchus returns to direct while Tim Minchin is again behind the original music and lyrics. And Tony winner Dennis Kelly joins in with the assist in adapting the book for screen.
Matilda The Musical will hit Netflix on December 2nd, just in time for families to enjoy over the holiday season.
