That’s My Sh!t
Insecure co-creator Issa Rae is back with her next project, and HBO is welcoming her with open arms. HBO has released an official trailer for the project, Rap Sh!t, for which Rae serves as executive producer and writer. The series is a dram-com that follows high school friends in Miami as they try to make a name for themselves in the rap world.
Syreeta Singleton, who worked with Rae as a writer on Insecure will executive produce and serve as showrunner. Singleton most recently worked as a writer on the Apple animated series Central Park.
The series is loosely based on the experiences of real-life Miami hit-makers City Girls (Yung Miami and JT), both of whom serve as consultants on the scripted series.
Rap Sh!t stars Aida Osman and rapper KaMillion who shine in the trailer serving just as many quotable one-liners as they do dramatic music industry moments. The trailer gives Entourage, Atlanta, Dave, Girls 5 Eva, and Zola vibes, aka it feels like a crazy wild industry ride that viewers will love to go on.
Rap Sh!t premieres on HBO Max on July 21st.
Netflix Hustles Chris Evans Into New Project
According to Deadline, everyone’s favorite Chris (Evans) has signed on to join Emily Blunt in Pain Hustlers, a film about a woman who gets swept up in a conspiracy while working for a failing pharmaceutical start-up in Florida.
David Yates of the Harry Potter franchise is set to direct while the script is written by Wells Tower, adapting from the Evan Hughes book. While Blunt will play Liza Drake, the woman the center of the conspiracy, there’s no word yet on precisely who Evans will portray. But whether he’s friend or foe, no doubt his character is going to be painfully charming.
Evans’ addition to the cast is likely welcome news to Netflix stockholders given the hefty price tag the streamer had to pay to secure distribution rights to the film. Netflix paid a reported $50 million just for the rights (aka not including production costs) to the pharmaceutical film, so likely having the chiseled grin of an MCU heavyweight and Knives Out alum on the movie poster will allow some to sleep better at night.
No release info yet, but the film is being compared to The Big Short and The Wolf of Wall Street, so it’s certain that Netflix won’t stay silent for very long once production ramps up.
