This just in: The STW Daily News Round Up featuring all the news that’s fit to (digitally) print for Thursday, July 21, 2022. Jordan Peele’s Nope reviews are overwhelmingly positive and Netflix’s The Gray Man is the best new movie streaming this weekend.

“Nope” first reviews are positive

With the review embargo officially lifted, the Twittersphere saw reviews of Jordan Peele’s new film Nope begin to sprinkle the internet this week.

Sitting at a solid 82% Fresh on the Tomatometer, critics have been overwhelmingly positive about Peele’s newest horror comedy.

Kyle Wilson of Lamplight review wrote, “It harkens back to the original summer blockbuster in the best way possible – with fresh faces and unknown threats that both scare and delight.”

Ed Potton of the Times (UK) added, “…A bracingly ambitious blend of UFO flick, horror, western and black comedy that’s full of marquee moments and bound together by a thrilling strangeness.”

All very encouraging news as fans head to theaters this weekend to virtually no other new releases – which may be by design.

After the success of Get Out and Us, Peele has increasingly become a reliable and highly bankable director in Hollywood. Are studios beginning to avoid his windows?

Nope, by Jordan Peele

After random objects falling from the sky result in the death of their father, ranch-owning siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood attempt to capture video evidence of an unidentified flying object with the help of tech salesman Angel Torres and documentarian Antlers Holst.

From Director Jordan Peele, Nope follows residents of an isolated town who witness a mysterious and abnormal event and attempt to capture video evidence of an unidentified flying object.

If you’re not planning a trip to the big screen, then….

The Gray Man is your best bet if you’re in the market for new content

After an incredibly solid start to the summer with the release of well known properties like Stranger Things and Resident Evil, Netflix is again the place to stream this weekend. With virtually no other new features hitting rival streaming services, Netflix’s The Gray Man will likely be what many will be watching – no pressure, Ryan.

Luckily, Ryan Gosling’s newest film has received fairly positive reviews so far.

Matt Neglia, of Next Best Picture, tweeted “THE GRAY MAN is a tactically aggressive, assassin action film by the Russo Brothers. Ryan Gosling brings his usual stoic toughness against Chris Evans’ wicked charm. Not as impressive as the Mission: Impossible or John Wick films but still a hefty piece of popcorn entertainment.”

And RamaScreen.com wrote, “The Gray Man is 2022’s perfect summer action flick. Adrenaline-fueled & hugely entertaining! Ryan Gosling was badass. I loved every minute of Chris Evans’ delicious ruthlessness.”

Will The Gray Man live up to the hype?

Fans will find out soon. The Gray Man drops on Netflix at 3 a.m., Friday morning.
