With AMC’s The Walking Dead coming to a close after 11 seasons, the series is set to branch out to several spin-off TV shows and movies in what appears to be an unstoppable content machine. Although the Rick Grimes trilogy is yet to even begin filming, spin-offs like World Beyond have already begun to set the scene for the future of the Walking Dead Universe. But what about the potential Daryl and Carol series we’ve been anticipating?
These characters started off on opposite ends of the “survivor spectrum.” With Carol being a quiet mom and wife that would just let her abusive husband be, to the literal queen of the kingdom and a total badass that could handle her own in the post-apocalyptic world. Throughout the show, we’ve seen their relationship blossom. And with the possibility of there being something more, fans were excited to see how the showrunners would tackle that dynamic going forward.
But the thing with the Walking Dead is, you never really know what’s real and what isn’t.
Will we see more of the Daryl/Carol dynamic in the Walking Dead spin-off?
For years, rumors have been floating around that there is no Daryl and Carol spin-off and that the entire narrative is a smokescreen for another major character death, with the other having to live on without them. But, as the years went on, a spin-off with both seemed imminent.
Unfortunately, while many fans have rejoiced knowing that Daryl’s spin-off is confirmed, the concept of them both together seems highly unlikely any time soon.
Last April it was reported that Melissa McBride couldn’t move to the UK to shoot the spin-off, and because she’d been on the Walking Dead for over a decade, she’s decided to take time off to be with her family for the next couple of years.
Reedus confirmed this as well and defended McBride in an interview with The Tonight Show, stating that the spin-off was being retooled with him alone as the protagonist.
While this may disappoint some fans, Reedus also revealed that Daryl might be running into other major characters, some that we might not be expecting. And fans may not have to wait deep into 2023 or later to find out.
Filming for the spin-off begins in London soon, and we may even be looking at a pilot release within the following year.
