Original: The Best Streaming Services in Mexico.
In the United States, traditional streaming now accounts for thirty-three percent of all video content watched (cable and live streaming also make up one-third of viewing each). In Mexico, the industry is still growing, though experts anticipate that streaming viewership will reach 6.6% overall by the close of 2022. However, the streaming industry in Mexico, which is already worth over $400 million annually, is increasing, with most strategists estimating there will be nearly 13 million viewers who rely on streaming for their news and entertainment alone by 2027 (roughly 10% of the country’s population). So what are the best streaming services in Mexico today?
First, let’s get this out there. These streaming services in Mexico are not ranked based on popularity; here is that list:
- Youtube.com
- Netflix.com
- Hbomax.com
- Cuevana.pro
- Starplus.com
Instead, we decided to focus on value and convenience, and Mexico viewers have plenty of options. So which streaming services in Mexico are preferred down south?
List of best streaming services in Mexico
Star Plus
Star Plus isn’t the most popular streaming service in Mexico, but it may be the best bang for your buck. Like the Disney Plus subscription in the US, Star Plus bundles Disney, ESPN+, and National Geographic.
And while Disney+ just spiked to $19.99 in the US, viewers in Mexico still get a thirty percent discount, with Star Plus coming in at $13.99.
Star Plus is our discount pick.
Cinapolis Clik
Cinapolis Clik is Mexico’s version of Vudu. The online premiere cinema service offers a wide selection of new films and appears to provide access to these films based on rates set by the content creators. For example, if you want to buy Wonder Woman 1984, the cost is 89 pesos. However, if you wish to rent A Quiet Place 2, it will set you back 149 pesos. The rates are somewhere inconsistent.
And while users can create an account and load up their profile with “points” (fun and fancy words for money, lol), there isn’t any other benefit (like discounts or free content) for maintaining membership.
However, Cinapolis Clik is the convenience pick on our list because the streaming market in Mexico has yet to mature, and options for viewing the newest and freshest content are limited.
And given the scattered connectivity and ability of many citizens of the country to afford internet access (nearly half of the country is still disconnected), we opted to include Mexico’s buffet-style streaming service as it may be the best bet for individuals who are not connected often, don’t subscribe to any streaming services, or just want to enjoy a new film via stream from time to time.
HBO Max
Believe it or not, HBO has quietly slid into Mexico, even if it’s trying not to. Technically, HBO Max only works in the US. However, international viewers, including those in Mexico, can still access the service via VPN. HBO Max, accessed via VPN, is the third most popular streaming service in Mexico (wow).
But it’s understandable. HBO Max caught everyone off guard in 2021 because of its vast content collection and its policy during COVID to simultaneously release new films in theaters and online. Of course, David Zaslav has nixed this policy (and pissed many people off along the way with cancellations like Batgirl), but the streamer has maintained its position because it’s content collection is stacked and the user interface works well.
HBO Max is our value pick because it has managed to infiltrate markets where it isn’t even offered, demonstrating just how solid and underrated the service is.
YouTube
As mentioned in the list above, YouTube is the most-watched streaming service in Mexico. And with good reason. YouTube offers endless videos and access to live-streaming content creators at no cost to viewers.
YouTube also allows users to watch the news, listen to music and podcasts, and more. This one is a no-brainer for anyone streaming on a budget.
YouTube made our list as the budget pick because of its enormous amount of free content.
Netflix
Of course, we can’t leave out the OG streamer, Netflix. Globally, over 200 million viewers subscribe to Netflix. It is hands down one of the most popular streaming services in nearly every country (it makes the top 10 in every country it is in).
Fifty percent of all traditional streaming video in Mexico is done on Netflix. That’s why the streamer made our list as the staple pick in Mexico.
Final words
The streaming market in Mexico is still maturing. With nearly half the country still offline, it will take some time before more premium options are available. However, there are some pretty incredible deals if you’re looking in the first New World of America Mexicana.
