In light of Qatar’s last-minute decision to pull beer from the venue this Sunday, many fans have said they plan to boycott the World Cup this year. Of course, refusing to serve alcohol after promising that the country’s strict application of religious law would be accommodated for visitors isn’t the most significant controversy surrounding Qatar’s World Cup fiasco, but that seems to be what has pushed audiences over the edge.

How did Qatar win the 2022 World Cup?

Bidding for the 2022 World Cup goes back over a decade and has been mired in controversy since.

There were originally 11 bids for the 2022 World Cup, including Mexico, Indonesia, the US, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Japan, and Australia. Four additional submissions were eliminated in the early stages.

After Russia was granted the 2018 World Cup, several applicant countries were moved into consideration for 2022. Japan, Australia, and South Korea were eliminated in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of voting, which left the US and Qatar. After promising to make concessions and modifications to their local policies, Qatar was ultimately awarded the 2022 destination and pulled its 2026 submission.

There have been countless allegations of bribery surrounding Qatar’s win. Qatar has been accused of using “Black Ops” to obtain an advantage, which included peddling influence for money and even hiring a former CIA agent to spy on other countries’ bids. In 2015, Swiss officials opened investigations into authorities responsible for reviewing and negotiating the bids. Ultimately, however, Qatar was cleared of suspicion of wrongdoing.

Qatar has faced intense criticism for its record on human rights and the treatment of LGBTQ individuals (with concerns about how visitors will be treated), but it looks like Qatar removing alcohol is what has outraged viewers most.

And while most of us here at STW would probably be in the WTF group if we were in Qatar this weekend and scavenging for alcohol; we can still get hyped about this year’s very late World Cup (games were moved to late in the year to avoid Qatar’s summer heat).
