File: Twitch Stream Programmable Keypads
Streamers on Twitch have a lot of cool gadgets they can use to enhance their stream workflow. One of the most popular options is Twitch stream programmable keypads. Thanks to their flexibility, they can make live streaming a breeze.
What is a stream programmable keypad?
Programmable keypads are devices that consist of blank keys to which you can assign actions of your choosing. Although they existed well before streaming became popular, it was Elgato’s Stream Deck series that put them on the map. Today, they’re considered a near-must for Twitch streamers.
The advantage of having such a device is that you can assign to individual buttons a variety of actions to simplify your workflow. For example, you can assign each of your scenes to its own key and press them when you want to switch. Another fun application is to assign a dedicated mute button for your mic. And these are just the tip of the iceberg of what you can accomplish with a programmable keypad.
Which are the best twitch stream programmable keypads by budget?
Elgato used to be one of the only key players in this space. Now, though, there are tons of options for programmable keypads that are great for any budget.
Entry level
As an entry-level streamer, your budget is quite small (unless you’re rolling in it) so your main focus should be to put the most money into your audio before anything else. However, that doesn’t mean you’re out in the cold if you feel a keypad would benefit you. You can start by looking at some solid free options.
There are two apps that can turn your phone or tablet into a respectable and highly extendable keypad. Touch Portal and Macro Deck can both be used for free and have a lot of features that enable you to make the control panel of your dreams. They both have a bit of a learning curve but they won’t cost you a dime to set up. Lots of streamers even stick with these apps despite making decent money.
On the other hand, if you’ve got a bit of money left to splash out on a keypad, you can’t go wrong with either a generic blank keypad or Elgato’s Stream Deck Mini. The latter is admittedly still in what could be considered the pricier range but it’s a high-quality product that’ll get you started in the Elgato ecosystem.
Small streamer level
If you’ve spent a good deal of time streaming, you’re probably at a point where you’ve got a small audience going. This means it’s time to step things up in terms of gear, and that includes getting a more respectable programmable keypad. At this point, you’re not quite splashing out for the more expensive stuff but you can spend a tiny bit more for some extra convenience.
Naturally, you can’t go wrong with Elgato’s Stream Deck Mk II. This is the refreshed version of their original device and it’s an absolute workhorse. With 15 programmable keys, and the ability to make profiles and pages of functions, you’ve got near-endless possibilities to turn this little device into the control center of your stream. If you’re already using a couple of other Elgato products, you can also control them with your Stream Deck.
An alternative here is to pick up a gaming mechanic keypad, preferably one with plenty of macro keys. These are designed as one-handed keyboards for gamers but their added functions enable you to turn them into highly flexible programmable keypads. Logitech and Razer have some great options in this category that won’t break the bank.
Blowing up level
When you finally reach a point in your Twitch streaming career where you’re making a decent income, it’s time to really go all-out with your gear purchases. At this level, you’ve got the pick of the bunch when it comes to programmable keypads.
Starting off, Elgato has two great offerings at this level. The Stream Deck XL is just like the original, only bigger. With 32 face keys and the same expandability capabilities as the rest of the line, you’ll be spoilt for choice. On the other hand, you can swap out tons of keys for versatility with the newly announced Stream Deck+. This handy control panel has four programmable knobs and a touchscreen on top of the usual keys.
For those that are not into Elgato, you’ve got the Loupedeck Live as an alternative. This programmable panel has a wide selection of buttons and knobs that surround a touchscreen. Combining these elements makes for a highly versatile device that’ll take your live content creation to the next level.
