Forgive us if we’re wrong, but we like Hot Skull this week.

What are we excited about streaming this weekend?

Darby and the Dead (2022) – Hulu

From Hulu: After suffering a near-death experience as a young girl, Darby Harper (Downs) gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted and shut off from her high school peers and prefers to spend time counseling lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth.

Darby and the Dead Projected Audience Score: 60.

Why did Darby and the Dead receive an audience score of 60?

Streaming This Weekend evaluates trailers based on up to 30 questions and criteria to spot production value in movies. The score is not perfect. In fact, it likely speaks more to the quality of the trailer, which we believe reflects sentiment for the final film.

Here’s an idea of the types of questions we ask of a trailer:

  • Does most of the footage look like it’s from the 3rd act? This could indicate that there isn’t enough good film to put into a two minute trailer.
  • Is the audio filled with replays of songs you’ve heard in other films? Are the sound effects old hat? This could indicate a weak score and low production budget.
  • Are characters, animals, or objects used to point out something that should be interesting without assistance? This could mean the editors didn’t feel confident the shot would grab audiences.

We also incorporate trends from the players involved in the movie. How did the last director’s film do? What project did the writers and producers contribute to last? How were the performers received in their last film? All in all, we incorporate 30 data points or more into our evaluation of the trailer(s). Here are a few results we’ve put together with their final audience scores:

FilmPASActual Audience Score
The Mask73.3670
Avatar80.0282
Iron Man10091
Doctor Strange The Multiverse of Madness7385
Venom 80.280
O’Brother Where Art Thou86.6889
R.I.P.D.24329
Mile 266.744
Enola Holmes 270.0379
Land of the Lost40.0632

And while the scoring system isn’t perfect, we’d like to identify whether is enough in a trailer to capture the sentiment of the stakeholders involved, which could help us understand how audiences will receive it.

Troll (2022) – Netflix

From Netflix: Deep inside the mountain of Dovre, something gigantic awakens after being trapped for a thousand years. Destroying everything in its path, the creature is fast approaching the capital of Norway. But how do you stop something you thought only existed in Norwegian folklore?

Troll Projected Audience Score: 71.

Thee Pines (2022) – Prime

From Amazon: Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec and his team investigate a series of perplexing murders in the mysterious Eastern Townships village of Three Pines, uncovering the buried secrets of its eccentric residents and in the process forcing Gamache to confront buried secrets of his own.

Three Pines Projected Audience Score: 75.

Riches (2022) – Prime

From Amazon: With the sudden death of Stephen Richards, his family is left in disarray at the return of his estranged daughter and son Nina and Simon. Much to the shock of Stephen’s second wife Claudia and their children, an unexpected turn of events places Nina as new head of the family empire, Flair & Glory. The scene is set for a messy showdown with both factions of the family vying for control.

Riches Projected Audience Score: 83.

Hot Skull (2022) – Netflix

From Netflix: Based on the novel HOT SKULL by Afşin Kum, set in a world shaken by an epidemic of madness that spreads through language and speech, the reclusive former linguist Murat Siyavus, having taken refuge at his mother’s home, is the only person mysteriously unaffected by this disease. Hunted by the ruthless Anti-Epidemic Institution, Murat is forced to leave the safe zone and flee within the flames and ruins of the streets of Istanbul, where he searches for the secret of his “hot skull” – a lasting mark of the disease.

Honestly, we weren’t 100 percent in agreement about Hot Skull . It’s hard to determine whether or not the movie will resonate with US viewers (it’s also hard to run our 30 point questionnaire against a foreign film). However, the limited information we have about Hot Skull and the trailer suggests a high audience score.

Hot Skull Projected Audience Score: 85.

Before you go: you might have missed this last week

Our Universe (Netflix): Netflix’s newest documentary is giving off some pretty awesome Prehistoric Planet vibes. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, Netflix aims to tell an epic odyssey spanning a period of nearly 14 billion years.

The six-part series will explore the connections that bind us all in the natural world.

Will there be aliens? Will it explain the Hot Skull plot (lol)?

Happy streaming everyone! We’re excited to see if our Hot Skull PAS is on point!
