Forgive us if we’re wrong, but we like Pinocchio this week.
What are we excited about streaming this weekend?
Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022) – Netflix
From Netflix: Academy Award®-winning director Guillermo del Toro and award winning, stop-motion legend Mark Gustafson reimagine the classic Carlo Collodi tale of the fabled wooden boy with a whimsical tour de force that finds Pinocchio on an enchanted adventure that transcends worlds and reveals the life-giving power of love.
Pinocchio Audience Score: 91.
Why did Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio receive a PAS of 91?
Streaming This Weekend evaluates trailers based on up to 30 questions and criteria to spot production value in movies. The score is not perfect. In fact, it likely speaks more to the quality of the trailer, which we believe could give us insight into the final film.
Here’s an idea of the types of questions we ask of a trailer:
-
- Does most of the footage look like it’s from the 3rd act? This could indicate that there isn’t enough good film to put into a two minute trailer.
-
- Is the audio filled with replays of songs you’ve heard in other films? Are the sound effects old hat? This could indicate a weak score and low production budget.
-
- Are characters, animals, or objects used to point out something that should be interesting without assistance? This could mean the editors didn’t feel confident the shot would grab audiences.
We also incorporate trends from the players involved in the movie. How did the last director’s film do? What project did the writers and producers contribute to last? How were the performers received in their last film? All in all, we incorporate 30 data points or more into our evaluation of the trailer(s). Here are a few results we’ve put together with their final audience scores:
Film | PAS | Actual Audience Score |
The Mask | 73.36 | 70 |
Avatar | 80.02 | 82 |
Iron Man | 100 | 91 |
Doctor Strange The Multiverse of Madness | 73 | 85 |
Venom | 80.2 | 80 |
Darby and the Dead | 60 | 75 |
Troll (2022) | 71 | 51 |
Three Pines | 75 | 71 |
Riches | 83 | 87 |
Hot Skull | 85 | NS/7.2 IMDB |
And while the scoring system isn’t perfect, we’d like to identify whether there is enough in a trailer to capture the sentiment of the stakeholders involved, which could help us understand how audiences will receive it.
Emancipation (2022) – Apple TV
From Apple: Inspired by a true story, one man fights through unthinkable terrors in an attempt to reunite with his family. Will Smith stars in Emancipation, directed by Antoine Fuqua. Premieres in theaters December 2, streaming on Apple TV+ December 9.
Emancipation Projected Audience Score: 79.
Something From Tiffany’s (2022) – Prime
From Amazon: Nothing compares to the magic and excitement of the holidays in New York City, where the streets blaze with lights, windows dazzle and a special box from Tiffany could change the course of a person’s life. Or several lives. Rachel and Gary (Zoey Deutch, Ray Nicholson) are happy enough but not quite ready for that big commitment. Ethan and Vanessa (Kendrick Smith Sampson, Shay Mitchell), the perfect picture, are just about to make it official.
Something From Tiffany’s Projected Audience Score: 67.
Retrograde (2022) – Disney/Hulu
From Disney: RETROGRADE captures the final nine months of America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan from multiple perspectives: one of the last U.S. Special Forces units deployed there, a young Afghan general and his corps fighting to defend their homeland against all odds, and the civilians desperately attempting to flee as the country collapses and the Taliban take over.
Retrograde Projected Audience Score: 91.
Who Killed Jenni Rivera (2022) – Peacock
From Netflix: A celebration of the life and an exploration of the mysterious death of award-winning Latin superstar Jenni Rivera. Through intimate footage and interviews delving into the still undetermined causes of the horrific 2012 crash of her plane outside Monterrey, Mexico, it provides an in-depth look at the real story and continuing questions behind the accident and events leading up to it.
Who Killed Jenni Rivera Audience Score: 81.
