HBO’s The Last of Us shattered records
On the heels of numerous failed video game adaptations in Hollywood, including Monster Hunter, Hitman, Resident Evil, Blood Rayne, Max Payne, House of the Dead, Far Cry, Mortal Kombat, Alone in the Dark, and Uncharted (pretty much every video game adaption ever made with the exception Paramount’s Halo), HBO’s The Last of Us had enormous expectations. And wow, this series delivered.
From January 30 to February 5, HBO’s The Last of Us garnered 1.2 billion minutes of streaming; in its third week. Water cooler conversation moved from local politics to the science behind cordyceps in nature; some on social media even questioned whether the real-life cordyceps could one day infect human beings and create the kind of havoc portrayed in HBO’s adaptation. Not likely, but that won’t stop the hysteria.
Needless to say, fans of HBO’s The Last of Us have been looking for a new place to get their weekly fix of cordyceps. And now, viewers need to look no further than a channel dedicated to The Last of Us on Twitch.
Fans of the series are finding a new love for The Last of Us on Twitch
Why is The Last of Us on Twitch so popular? The story itself may be new to many viewers, but hardcore gamers have held a special place in their hearts for The Last of Us for years.
Since its 2013 release by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us has remained one of the most popular post-apocalyptic genre games among gamers in history. From its engaging storyline to its fleshed-out characters (pun intended), The Last of Us draws players into a world with complex moral and ethical dilemmas and highly emotionally-charged POIs.
One thing that gamers loved about the original game was its cinematic approach to storytelling, high-quality graphics, and interactive moments that immerse players in the narrative. The game was also praised for its attention to detail and ability to immerse players into the story and the fates of characters.
The game has earned dozens of nominations and awards and has been praised for its mechanics and gameplay that blends action, stealth, and survival horror. From scavenging for resources, crafting equipment, and fighting off cordyceps-infected zombies, gamers are challenged to survive in a harsh and unforgiving environment; something fans of the HBO series are very familiar with at this point.
And that’s what fans are tuning into The Last of Us on Twitch for. Beyond the television’s adaptation of the game, The Last of Us does an incredible job of capturing loss, grief, and the human condition on a personal level, which added another layer of meaning to gameplay (on top of being incredibly fun to play).
