Which promo code for Discovery Plus should you use?
With all the hubbub surrounding the United States military’s use of force against several unidentified flying objects this month, we decided to give Discovery Plus a stream to brush up on all things alien and paranormal. We ended up streaming on Discovery for two days straight. So, which promo code for Discovery Plus should you use to get started with the Warner Bros. documentary service? Well, it depends.
Which promo code for Discovery Plus you use depends on YOU
First off, none of the promo codes for Discovery advertised on the LA Times’ popular coupon codes index worked for us (as of February 13th, 2023 – we tried again before publishing this piece).
We’re not sure why the codes are still advertised, but it’s probably a moot point, the discounts still exist in some form or another, you just need to know where to look before creating an account.
Discovery Plus for students
One great thing Discovery Plus has done, following in Kanopy’s footsteps, is offering students more affordable access to its documentary-focused catalog. Discovery Plus and Peacock already rank high on our shortlist for cost vs. value in online streamers, but Discovery’s offer is slightly better if you’re an active student. Where Peacock is still offering a year of service at 40 percent off ($2.99 a month billed annually), Discovery’s discount is ongoing, for as long as active student status can be verified (validated annually).
To get started as a student with Discovery Plus, follow these steps:
- Create your account at the Discover Plus student offer free trial page
- Discovery uses a company called SheerID to verify your student status
- Download a copy of your class schedule and have a photo of your student ID ready
- SheerID will verify your eligibility
- Stream everything Discovery Plus has to offer while SheerID wraps up the process
That’s it! While you wait, you’ll be on a 7-day free trial, no promo code for Discovery Plus is needed.
Discovery Plus for active military
Thankfully, active military personnel doesn’t need a promo code for Discovery Plus to enjoy discounted streaming. Similar to Discovery’s offer for students, active military personnel are eligible for the same discount, 40 percent off, though Warner Bros. has sweetened the deal a tad more for the men and women serving in the US armed forces.
While students have access to Discovery’s $4.99 ad-supported plan for $2.99, active military gets the streamer’s ad-lite plan for $2.99, which reduces the amount of time viewers spend watching ads during a program.
The discount is valid for as long as active duty status can be verified. To join Discovery’s ranks now:
- Visit Discovery’s active duty personnel trial page
- Select your status
- Select your branch
- Provide Discovery the consent to verify your status
- Submit to start streaming for free
- SheerID will verify your credentials on an annual basis
Once you’ve submitted your information, Discovery will open up their library to you with a 7-day free trial while your info is verified.
And for everybody else?
Unfortunately, this is where the best news ends. Unlike Peacock, which offers the same price point to all viewers if subscription fees are paid annually, Discovery Plus does not currently offer discounts for the rest of us average Joes. However, starting a free trial with Discovery Plus is a breeze, AND, unlike several other popular OTT services, Discovery does not end your free trial if you cancel after creating an account. That’s confidence.
We started our trial on an iPhone, linked our account to two televisions using a Google Chromecast and Amazon Fire Stick, and then canceled our membership so we wouldn’t be billed. To our surprise, turning off our subscription didn’t impact our ability to access Discovery during the free trial – though we plan on renewing it anyway.
So, no promo code for Discovery Plus will get you a better deal to our knowledge, but the streamer makes it incredibly easy to give them a spin without committing to a monthly fee upfront.
Our Discovery playlist this week: Aliens in Alaska, Alien Endgame, Contact. LOL.
