File: This will get your banned from Twitch immediately.

The internet is full of garbage and offensive content. In 2023, there is almost no place online safe from content that may trigger viewers. Speaking as a millennial who just makes the cut (by weeks), it has been amazing to witness such a momentous shift in culture and information availability. Things have really changed, for better or worse.

Just in the age of the internet, let’s call it 1983 to present, it’s shocking how far we’ve come in terms of what families are willing to tolerate in their living rooms; in the 1980s and 1990s, Faces of Death was the scourge of high school principles. The head explosions and parachute fails were disturbing, however, kids were still limited to an hour or so of it (or however long the VHS was).

Today, kids can just turn on their phone and dial up anything they want. Deaths, pornography, torture, ISIS propaganda, or just people doing really weird stuff. Honestly, our imaginations, for better or worse, have never been more accessible. And while the availability of information has very likely increased humanity’s intelligence as a whole, it will be interesting to see what unlimited access to gross and unsettling content does to American culture over a period of decades.

In any case, of all the things you find online and even stream on platforms like YouTube and Kick, it’s nice to know that one of the most popular social/entertainment platforms online has limits; this is one thing that will get you banned from Twitch, immediately.

This will get your banned from Twitch, and probably jailed

Last January a “deep fake” pornography incident occurred on Twitch which prompted the platform to update their policies to include a ban on something called “synthetic non-consensual exploitative images” or NCEI.

Apparently, a Twitch user streamed AI generated pornographic content that, aside from being pornography on a platform intended for viewers as young as 13, was also exploitive of the AI generated characters involved.

It isn’t clear what exactly happened, who was exploited, or what the legal ramifications were for the streamer who was banned from Twitch, but what is certain is how serious the live streaming giant has taken it, moving as far as indefinite suspension for any prankster or sicko who tries to slip disgusting NCEI content by the mods at Twitch.

Twitch views NCEI content as more disturbing than deep fake porn

The main reason NCEI content will get you banned from Twitch immediately is because it is actually much worse than porn.

Pornography, which Twitch also prohibits, typically consists of consenting adults participating in sexual activity, presented via some type of time-based media. NCEI, on the other hand, is sexually exploitive content that is not consensual. In short, it is content that displays one or more persons being exploited in a sexual manner. According to Twitch, this distinction was important to make in their policy updates this month because, well, one thing is a Terms of Service (TOS) violation, another could be a crime.

According to Twitch:

“Calling synthetic NCEI content “pornography” is incorrect. Porn (while prohibited on Twitch) should be consensual and should feature people who know they’re taking part in activities that others are going to see. That’s not what’s happening here, and why it’s important we reinforce unequivocally that this content is created without consent.”

As a result, any reported incident in which a streamer has used NCEI content will lead to their channel being permanently banned from Twitch.

NCEI content used in any form will get you banned from Twitch

According Twitch’s latest press release, any use of pornographic or NCEI content will lead to immediate enforcement activity (indefinite suspension). Even if the content appears in your stream momentarily, or as part of a clip where you are providing commentary on how awful it is, expect Twitch to take swift and definitive action.

Here’s what Twitch has to say about pornographic and NCEI content:

“We’re updating our Adult Sexual Violence and Exploitation policy to make it more clear that intentionally promoting, creating, or sharing synthetic NCEI can result in an indefinite suspension on the first offense.”

But they don’t stop there, again, even showing the content to raise awareness or express disgust can lead to suspension.

“We’re [also] updating our Adult Nudity policy to include synthetic NCEI. Even if that NCEI is shown only briefly, or, for example, shown to express your outrage or disapproval of the content, it will be removed and will result in an enforcement.”

In other words, NCEI content has no place on the platform and will get you banned from Twitch immediately. No questions asked.

To report NCEI content on Twitch in the US, Twitch advises viewers to use the Cyber-Civil Rights Initiative helpline, which provides resources for those affected by NCEI.
